Continuing my previous Photoshop tutorials about layer style to make photo effects, I will show you about why the layer style is no longer appear in jpeg/jpg files. As I have mentioned before that layer style can only be applied on a non locked Photoshop layer. If you want to add layer style effects in a background layer, the layer have to be unlocked first. You can unlock the layer by double click the layer name and click OK on the following dialog box. You will make that layer in to layer 0.
After you add layer style effects in that layer, if you want to make any modification to the image in the future, you must NOT save it in these following file format: jpeg, jpg, bmp, gif, or many other file format that only has single layer information on it.
Because those file only has background layer, so the layer style will combined in to the background. You may notice that the layer style is gone after you save it in jpeg/jpg files. If you have not close the file yet, you can still undo your graphic editing work. But if you have close it, there is no other way to make the layer style appear. The jpg files are already lo longer contain the layer style information.
Here is a image shows about the different of the layer composition between a photo in psd and jpg file format.
You SHOULD save the file in psd, pdd (the default Photoshop files) to make the layers information saved along with the layer style effects.

I’m sorry, but this does not work. The layer effects are completely ruined when saving as .jpg – and the image must be saved as a .jpg. Note: None of the layers are locked.
