Lasso Tools Selection-Photoshop Guides for Beginner

Polygonal Lasso
This lasso type is use to make straight line selection. I use a tulips flower in this Photoshop CS4 tutorial, so this lasso type isn’t a good choice. To use this lasso, click on the image, and continue clicking until you reach the starting point.

Magnetic Lasso
Magnetic Lasso is a lasso that able to detect object image border, according to the color and contrast intensity. To maximize this tools ability, try to adjust the option in Option bar. For general, I always use very small Width and Contrast value, and maximum Frequency.

Selection can be made by click once on the object border and move the pointer along that object border. Don’t click and hold as in Lasso tools, you can release the mouse button while moving the pointer.

Lasso tools are to make quick selection; they are very hard to make an accurate selection. I only use them to a simple and quick selection without considering detail and accuracy. To make a precise and accurate selection I always use path from Pen tool, and Channel for hair selection or other abstract images.

Tips:

• Undo a selection point that you have just made: press Delete key
• Undo all the selection process: press Esc key
• Finish the selection quickly without reaching the starting point: double click (in anywhere), or by Ctrl+click
• Make a 45 degree selection line using Polygonal lasso: hold Shift key
• Quick transform to Polygonal Lasso when using lasso: hold Alt key and release mouse button
• Quick transform to Polygonal Lasso when using Magnetic lasso: press Alt key and click mouse button at the same time.
• Quick transform to Lasso tool when using Polygonal lasso: hold Alt key and click+drag the mouse button
