Sometimes we need to get a smaller image file, mostly to save time and bandwidth usage for uploading it in internet. Except for some web service that limit our photo size such as Facebook that will standardize the file size to fit to their page wide. We don’t need to adjust the photo because no matter how big we upload the file, the result still be the same. But we can save some uploading time if we make the file size smaller.

We don’t have to reduce the file size if we want to save our work in Photoshop in to hard drive storage or Compact Disc. I usually save a large image file, in jpg or psd, just in case I need to edit them later.

Jpg file is one of the smallest file that popular to use. It has compression system that we can adjust to make the file smaller as possible. Of course we have to notice the image quality, because as smaller the file will be, the less quality the images are.

If you have edit an image file in Photoshop and it has more than one layer, the layers should be combined in to one first. If not, it will be combined automatically when you save it as jpg file, but you will get a triangle icon as warning in Save As dialog box. It is your call, you can combine the layers before it is saved or you just let it combined automatically.

adjust the jpg file quality by using the slider

Here you can adjust how small is the image will be. You can adjust it by using the slider, but you must keep in mind that the smaller the file, the less image quality you will get. Try to lower its size but keep the quality as you prefer. The jpg image quality here range from 0 (Very low quality) to 12 (Very high quality). I always use 6 until 8 for the quality, except for some case.

If you still want a smaller size, there is another file save option for jpg. You can save it from: File > Save for Web & Devices. This will make smaller jpg file size than the regular jpg (File > Save as .. jpg).

In Save for Web & Devices, you are not only adjust the quality number, but more of it. You can adjust the blur to reduce the image artifact, optimized the file to create smaller but less compatible, discard the metadata file.

That’s how we save a file in to jpg, so we can make smaller image size for upload process to the web.
