How to Save Selection in to Channel in Photoshop CS4

By default, when we make selection in Photoshop, the selection in a file will not able be saved along with the file. If you make a selection, and then save the file and close it, the selection will not appear when you open that file again.

Selection actually can be saved by make it in to a new duplicated layer, or by make it as new channel in Photoshop. In this Photoshop tutorial we will make a selection in to a channel, so it can be saving along with the file it self.

Saving a Selection in Photoshop

Make a simple selection for this Photoshop tutorial. You can make it by Lasso tools, Magic Wand or something.

As can be seen in this picture below, the image has a selection on it.

Now we will make the selection in to a custom channel. Choose Select > Save Selection. Type any name you want in the dialog box, and then click OK.

You can discard the selection now.
Save the file in psd format. The selection is saved as a custom channel now. Even if you close the file, the selection will still in this file.

How to Load a Selection in Photoshop

Open the file that contains custom selection as described above. To load the selection, choose Select > Load Selection

Or you can also click the channel name in Channel Panel.

In the Channel panel, there is a load channel button that can be use to load the selection.

Either you use the Select menu or from Channel panel, you can make the selection appear again base on the black and white color of the custom channel.
