This is a Photoshop CS4 tutorial on how to create a lightning image effects manually. Lightning can be made by only using Photoshop, and also by some brushes or plugins. If you want to create lightning or other nature effects in more simple and fast way, I suggest to use Alien Skin Xenofex 2.
How To Make Lightning Image using Photoshop
Step 1
Make a new file with white background color, the size is up to you. I use 1024×768 px in this tutorial.
Step 2
Use Brush tool with Black color as Foreground. Stroke this brush in full soft round tip. Make the half of this white background into black.
Step 3
Select Filter > Render > Different Clouds.

i cant figur out how to make more than one lightning bolt on the same picture can you explain with better detail please? sorry im new at this just got the program like three days ago.
@James: It was written in step 6. When you have made another bolts (step 1-4), place all of them in one image (step 5).
So you need to work in several image files, one is for the background, and the others are for creating lightning ( make the step 1-4 in other image file ). All of that images should be opened in different tab window, so it will easier to drag (using move tool) from one images to another.
